The Labour Party on Friday continue with its membership drive when the national leadership of the Party led by its Deputy National Chairman, Alhaji Bashiru Apapa, engaged stakeholders in an interactive session at a programme held at the Nigerian Labour Congress Secretariat, Abiola way, Abeokuta.
The One day event also witnessed large turn out of Party members and different support groups.
Addressing party members, the Deputy National Chairman, Apapa said the gathering became imperative considering the need to convince Nigerians on why it must be Peter Obi as President of Nigeria, and based on the directive from the national body of the party to embark on massive enlightenment and mobilisation of all Nigerians ahead of the 2023 general elections.
He said the meeting marked the beginning of mass mobilisation of the electorates for Peter Obi and Yusuf Baba-Ahmed movement and for members to harmonize all support groups.
“The executives have been given the mandate to move into the nooks and crannies of Nigeria and sensitise the people about the activities of Labour Party.
“Though we are not entirely new as a political party, but we are aware that the bad leadership style of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) over time has affected the psyche of voters in the country.
“We want to reinvigorate their appetite and hunger to participate in the electoral process.
“We want them to have hope in the new Nigeria which we are bringing on board.
“I tell you, it’s going to be a “Tsunami” in Nigeria, we are going to take over the country,” he said.
Alhaji Bashiru Apapa, also called for synergy and unity to deliver the Ogun state for Mr Obi and all LP candidates in 2023.
Alhaji Apapa said there was need for coordination of all support groups for Obi’s presidential ambition so as to achieve the objectives of enthroning him.
“When Obi became the LP presidential candidate, we have been deliberating on how to harmonise the support groups to work as a team.
“And we thought it wise to have synergy and work together nationwide so that we will not be working against ourselves.
“That is why today’s meeting is an important one for us to be acquainted and map out the strategies to achieve our objectives.
“We need to know what we intend to do to actualise the dream of enthroning Peter Obi as the next President of Nigeria, and why we must all do our best to make sure that the purpose is achieved,” Apapa said.
According to him, there are many support groups for Peter Obi, hence the need for proper coordination.
"Though the campaign have not started, but we must start level up the mobilisation. We need to increase our pace. It is our collective responsibility. We must not lose our focus in this project,” he added.
Our candidate’s past achievements have attracted supporters and again, not all of them believe that Nigeria should continue the way it is going now.
“They want change in the country,” he said.
The deputy national chairman said that past administrations had made the party the centre of their criticisms, because they were afraid of the growing support from Nigerians, which he attributed to the party’s popularity.
Also speaking, the National Legal Adviser of LP, Akingbade Oyelegan, added that the meeting was to also intimate its teeming supporters of the LP ideology.
“There is a surge in the party and some of these our teeming supporters do not know the LP ideology and what we stand for. Our ideology is based on Equal Opportunity and Social Justice for all.
“The problem we have before now is the fact that some of the support groups do not want to align with the Coalition for Peter Obi,” Mr Oyelegan said.
He stressed the need for all to be on the same page so as not to give room for corruption.
Oyelegan, who noted that the task of bringing Peter Obi to Aso Rock remained herculean, said the party and its support groups were, however, equal to the task.
“We are prepared to wrestle power but we know it is not going to come easy. We want to come together so that we can fight the battle. We have over 100 support groups and we are still expecting more,” he said.
Also speaking, Adeyinka Adetokunbo-Azubuike, the Zonal Director, Mobilisation and Logistics (South West) Coalition for Peter Obi, who noted that there were 41 support groups for Mr Obi in the zone, said all groups needed each other to succeed.
“This is a harmonisation move and sensitisation on Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC). The Coalition for Peter Obi is one body that is housing all support groups that are out to campaign for Obi. We are 100 per cent sure Peter Obi will win.”
