The Ogun State chapter of Nigerian Institution of Surveyors has joined the rest of the World to celebrate this year World Hydrography Day with a call on government to give priority to the coastal areas of the State by creating a department oversee activities at the water ways l.
A Fellow of Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Olumide Omotosho who was a guest lecturer and the National Coordinator Hydro Pro Group while speaking at this year programme organized by the State chapter of NIS said the government should give more attention to coastal areas like that of land norders.
He solicited for the involvement of all Surveyors and stakeholders in the survey and charting of the geographical landscape of waters.
He lauded the efforts of the Hydro Pro Group in creating awareness on why Surveyors should be more concern on the issues that had to do with coastline including the prevention of flooding in some landlocked areas.
Surveyor Omotosho, a Fellow of Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, speaking on the theme of the conference, ‘Hydrography: Contributing to the United Nations ocean decade,’ said Nigeria would gain much if it focuses on the securing its waterfronts and like it is doing to land borders .
He noted that the celebration focused on the works and responsibilities of the Nigerian Surveyors and other agencies of government like the Navy in surveying and charting of the geographical landscape of the waters.
He said, “Every day is hydrography day to Surveyors. Like other science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, hydrography has traditionally seen low rates of participation from the private and practicing Surveyors. It is my hope that in your pursuit of excellence, you will begin to promote in hydrography daily as well. And of course, this will be a good project for the hydrographer, to champion.”
“These huge hydrographic capacity development efforts are coming at a time when the world is focused on the use of ocean sciences to achieve sustainable development,” he added.
Earlier, the Ogun State Chairman of NIS Ogun State branch, Surveyor Ademola Adebowale said the World Hydrography Day is designed to raise awareness about hydrography and how it plays a role in improved knowledge of the seas and oceans.
He said the goal is to highlight how hydrography as an applied science supports the sustainable use of the oceans.
This can include how up-to-date surveys and data can be used for initiatives for the protection of the marine environment, coastal zone management, marine protected areas, marine spatial data infrastructures, renewable energies, and all other components of the blue economy.
"WHD provides opportunities to publicise the work and services carried out by hydrographic offices, industry partners, expert contributors, and the scientific community.
He applauded the efforts of Olumide Omotosho team in ensuring that Surveyors are getting recognition in the hydrography section, calling on every Surveyors to key into the project.
"The purpose is to shed light on the ability of hydrographers to gather and manage marine data and their strength in technical collaboration on a global scale catering to an expanding group of stakeholders.
