No fewer than 2,400 community leaders have participated in the annual Basic Citizenship and Leadership Training Course organised by the Ogun State Ministry of Community Development and Cooperatives.
The training, organised in collaboration with the Ogun State Community Development Council, is aimed at equipping grassroots administrators and community leaders with administrative skills, conflict-resolution techniques and modern development tools needed for effective community governance and sustainable self-help projects.
Participants were exposed to practical approaches to addressing challenges affecting community development, including waste management, climate change and environmental sustainability, community health promotion and disease prevention, as well as digital transformation for improved service delivery.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of Batch B held at the Social Development Institute, Shasha, Iperu, the Commissioner for Community Development and Cooperatives, Hon. Ademola Balogun, said community leaders wielded significant influence in their respective communities.
Balogun urged the participants to put the knowledge acquired during the training into practice by promoting peace, unity and sustainable development across the state.
He also disclosed that renovation work would soon commence at the Social Development Institute, noting that the state government planned to redesign and upgrade the facility to give it a modern look.
According to him, the government remained committed to completing the project and transforming the institute into a modern centre for community development training.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr. Lateef Benson, urged the participants to translate the knowledge and skills acquired into practical actions that would positively impact their communities.
He encouraged them to support government’s grassroots development initiatives and contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of their respective communities.
In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Development, Hon. Bashir Abdul, charged the participants to make judicious use of the time, financial resources and personal sacrifices invested in the training.
Abdul urged them to become agents of peace, unity and progress in their various communities, stressing the importance of applying the lessons learnt to address local challenges.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Sis. Grace Akumbur and Evang. Adewale Shittu commended the state government for prioritising the intellectual development of residents and providing a conducive environment for learning and interaction.
They promised that the participants would apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the training to improve the living conditions and development prospects of their various communities
