Gender-Based Violence: State takes bold steps, issues helplines

The issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is now going to be accorded preeminence and promptness in Ogun State, the Commissioner in the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye has affirmed.

To this end, the ministry has released GBV toll free lines: 08000000555, 08000000666 for victims of Gender Based Violence to call to for immediate assistance.

Adeleye said her ministry is now poised to sustain and amplify increased reportage on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases, adding that the ministry would also improve responses, grow solidarity of men and women championing the cause, to ensure no woman or girl is left behind

The Commissioner gave the assurance in a press statement issued to mark the commencement of annual 16 days of activity against Gender-Based Violence with the theme; "No Excuse: Unite to End Violence Against Women". 

According to the statement, "Over the past years, the sensitisation campaigns have reached unprecedented levels, driving meaningful conversations and changing attitudes across communities".       

She said through collaboration, persistent advocacy, awareness and expanded access to support systems, as well as resources for survivors, the state was able to make remarkable achievements.

Hon. Adeleye noted that the victories recorded had further inspired the Ministry's determination to strengthen policies and implement impactful measures to address all forms of violence against women, building a society where every woman and girl would live free from fear, abuse, and discrimination.

The Commissioner stated that the essence of this year's theme was to reflect and redoubled efforts in eliminating GBV and ensure every woman and girl lives with dignity, respect and the freedom they deserve.

She therefore called on relevant stakeholders and every individual to unite with the state government in building a safe society for all, continue to break the silence, support survivors and challenge harmful beliefs and practices that perpetuate violence, adding that survivors and those in need of support should immediately reach out to the state government GBV toll free lines 08000000555 08000000666.
