The Labour Party has condemned the Monday attack on the home of its Osun governorship candidate, Hon Lasun Yusuf, describing the attack as unfortunate.
In a statement issued in Abeokuta by Labour Party National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Abayomi Arabambi, the Party calls for adequate investigation into the attack, alleging that the State government may be culpable.
"Our party attention was alerted to the dangerous dimensions in the build up to Osun state Governorship Election coming up on Saturday the 16th July 2022 where APC thugs dressed in Police uniforms in a commando style attempted to snuff life of our party Gubernatorial candidate Rt Hon Yussuf Lasun through assassination in the wee hours of yesterday the 11th day of July 2022 by shooting sporadically at his residence in Ilobu Osun state but were repel by dutiful police men and other security personnel attached to him
It had earlier been reported that Hon. Lasun Yusuf had in the middle of the night announced on his verified twitter account that gunmen in uniforms besieged his Ilobu residence and shot sporadically.
But the Labour Party's Publicity Secretary, Comrade Abayomi Arabambi fingered the APC governorship candidate and the incumbent governor of Osun state to be behind the attack.
Arabambi in a press release made available to newsmen in Abeokuta said the assailants were repelled by dutiful policemen and other security personnel attached to the former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The party's spokesman maintained that, the brilliant and incisively performance of Hon. Lasun during the Channels TV political debate among the governorship candidates might have triggered the anger of the APC and its candidate.
He said, "it is believed by the public opinion that the attack was motivated by the brilliant and very incisively thrilling performance of Hon Yusuf Lasun the LP Osun State Governorship Candidate very conclusively out-performed and clearly exposed the lack of requisite capacity and knowledge of the Governor of the State who is also the Governorship Candidate of APC and (Ade dancer) the PDP Candidate Ademola Adeleke at the Channel's TV anchored debate by the Govership Candidates in the oncoming election.
"It is strongly believed that the intention is to assassinate the Candidate. Labour party believe that a Government that has been very deliberate in its poor funding of the Police and under the current level of insecurity in the State could hired over 100 strong fully armed APC thugs dressed in police uniform to an individual's house at midnight and kept shooting for over one hour at LP Candidate's house thoroughly frightening and fully intimidating all in the premises is beyond believing.
"In a nation run on the rule of law, a contingent of 100 armed thugs were rebuffed by the timely intervention of the police personnel, other security agents and people of the Community.
"It is a shame that in 2022 the APC had once again brought back the forgotten era of harassment and intimidation of the opposition, still it is better understood by the APC that in today's Nigeria, the people will stoutly resist any and all kinds of political intimidation and harassment of the opposition political parties."
Arabambi continued, "it must be loudly said and must be clearly noted by all Nigerians that the APC government deliberately and consciously tried through the illegal use of the armed thugs dressed in Police uniforms to incapacitate our Candidate in the pursuit of electoral campaign thinking that by that he can be cowed and thus be rendered unable to participate fully and effectively in the election to pave the way for the APC Candidate who yesterday was made to show his poor capacity in the governorship candidates' debate yesterday.
"Labour Party with the Candidacy of Hon. Yusuf Lasun have decided to save Osun State and no going back. It is quite very sad and disheartening to find that the only option left for APC against the large, very loud majority and intimidating acceptance, strong support and totally impressive loads of goodwill that the LP governorship candidate daily acquire and enjoy is resort to armed thugs intimidation.
Labour Party with the Candidacy of Hon. Yusuf Lasun have decided to save Osun State and no going back. "The APC truly feel out -matched in the political space of Osun State and the massive support received by LP and its Governorship Candidate, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Lasun to make it loose focus but it is not enough to employ crude and barbaric means to illegal reaction.
"LP honestly and sincerely hope that Bola Tinubu, the APC Presidential Candidate and a cousin to Oyetola, the current Osun State Governor and Candidate of APC will not be falsely inspired to walk the path of intimidating Government power usage towards the 2023 Presidential election. We say this because, it is the brilliance and glorious political performance of Hon. Yusuf Lasun in Osun State that has kept the great growing of LP and its electoral value that Peter Obi, the active Presidential Candidate of LP is duplicating on a very much larger scale at the National level."
