2022 Global Surveyors Day: Ogun NIS sensitize residents, speak on Professionalism

As Ogun State chapter of Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, (NIS) joins the rest of the world to celebrate the 2022 Global Survey Day, a call has gone to the surveyors and other stakeholders in the survey practice to continue to adhere to the rules guiding the practice of the profession.

The Secretary of Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Ogun State Chapter, Surveyor Debo Adeoye speaking on this year theme, "Surveyor and Surveying Contribution to sustainable development", said the roles been played by Surveyors world wide are numerous to mention contrary to what people see them doing daily.

He said Surveyors bring development and there is no development that can take place without the input of Surveyors.

He called on government nationwide most especially Ogun State government to factor in the services of Surveyors in order to accelerate the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to go northwards.

Surveyor Adeoye said year 2022 Global Surveyors’ Day come in a unique way as the celebration which started in 2018 takes place on March 21, annually, to celebrate the impacts of surveyors globally, and also bring to the front burner developmental issues underpinned by the profession.

He said Surveyors play critical roles in every well planned society, hence the need to celebrate the critical role the institution plays and to encourage members not to be dampened by any challenge Nigeria is facing currently.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman, Association of Private Practicing Surveyors of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter, Surveyor Olawale Oluwafemi x-rayed the importance of celebrating the Global Surveyors Day, saying that the day has assisted in enlightening the people on the need to always patronize professional surveyors.

He added that NIS has put in measures to fight quackery while advising the general public to always engage the services of qualified surveyors.

He noted that the day has been an avenue to brainstorm and proffer solutions to some surveying challenges and create awareness.
 
He urged government to continue to factor in Surveyors in all their activities warning that failure in that regard means doom for modern day society, hence everything possible must be done, including robust regulatory regime, to achieve sustainable infrastructural development.

Also speaking with Journalists, former Ogun NIS scribe and Vice Chairman Abeokuta South local government, Surveyor Lanre Sotayo called on professionals to continue to uphold high integrity and professionalism in all their dealings.

Speaking on this year's theme, Hon Lanre Sotayo said "sustainability is the buzzword of the moment but it is a serious consideration for Surveyors, architects, house builders and construction companies in the 21st Century. With population growth and an extra new homes needed every year to keep up with demand as well as large-scale infrastructure projects, it has never been more important.

"This need, coupled with earth’s dwindling resources and mounting concern over carbon emissions, means surveyors play a vital role in ensuring developments are sustainable, reusable and low energy.

He opined that surveyor plays a crucial role in the construction works such as roads, building and other engagements by minimizing costs and work in tandem with modern society.

This year's celebration saw members of Ogun State chapter moving round the city enlightening the populace on the roles and need to engage professional surveyors in all their building projects.
