World Cycling Day : Ogun govt., FRSC advocate for promotion of cycling

Ogun State government on Friday said it is considering a policy that will promote cycling and encourage more people to see bicycle as an effective means of transportation in the state.

The State Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, who disclosed this at a press conference in Abeokuta, as parts of activities to mark this year's World Bicycle Day, said, cycling  encourages physical and mental health of the people.

Dairo noted that bicycle is a very affordable and reliable way to commute, irrespective of age, adding that it would reduce health challenges associated with sedentary lifestyle, among other inherent benefits.

He explained that the annual celebration declared by the United Nations General Assembly was meant to encourage regular riding of bicycle, saying, “cycling promotes economic growth, reduces inequalities, while improving physical fitness of the cyclists”. 

Speaking on the importance of bicycle to fast track the socio-economic development of the State, the Commissioner said the present administration is working towards achieving a viable transportation system, that would ease movement of the people and goods.

He assured that cycling would be given a face lift due to its environmental-friendly advantage, stressing that it would reduce carbon emissions impact on the environment.

"Cycling is environmental-friendly transportation, which saves money on fuel, simple, reliable, and beneficial in all ways. So, joining the rest of the world to celebrate the day, the administration of Prince Dapo Abiodun will continue to promote any means of transportation system that will ease movement of the people and goods”.

Dairo said that government would  consider bicycle riding as a major means of transportation in the state, adding that it should be considered as a mode of transportation to work or school. 

He implored all road users to  know that bicycle riders have their own right on the highway, they should be respected and create space for them for easy riding.


He added that using bicycle as means of transportation would reduce number of cars and motorcycle on the road which would reduce road accident to the minimum.

He charged parents should encourage their children to ride to school by buying them bicycle and teach them the right way to ride, adding that the populace to always ride bicycles as a means of recreation, saying  it reset the body system, reduce sickness and also increase ones life spam.

In his remark, the State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC),Hammed Umar, who emphasised on the need to harness opportunities abound in different means of transportation, appreciated the federal and state governments for providing good roads to ease human and vehicular movements.

He said the world cycling day was about sensitisation on the need to ride bicycle and continue keeping fit. 

Umar explained that cycling is cheaper,  environment friendly, convenient and it reduced number of vehicles on the road which in turn reduced road traffic crashes.
