Ikorodu Community leaders petition Sanwoolu, IGP over activities of suspected cultists

The Community Leader of Gberigbe Orelade in Ikorodu area of Lagos State, High Chief Gbenga Daraloun Mayan (Baale elect) has called on the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Inspector General of Police, Alkali Usman Baba and the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Hakeem Odumosu, to save the Community from threats and persistent attacks from alleged cultists being used by some land grabbers.




He made the plea during a Press briefing in his Palace recently.

According to Chief Mayan, they were seeking government intervention to avoid bloodshed which may arise from usurpation of parcels of land in Gberigbe Orelade Community.

The Baale elect stated that he has informed Police authorities to checkmate the activities of the cultist which the Police authority has done a lot of good job but the cultist refused to yield to pressure being given to them by the Police.



“Members of the cultists and the land-grabbers have been on rampage in this community, selling land belonging to residents and attacking workers on construction sites, we have informed the Police authorities”.

Chief Gbenga Daraloun Mayan (Baale Elect), of Gberigbe orelade Royal family secured a court judgement at the High Court of Lagos State in the Ikorodu Judicial Division holding at Ikorodui, in suit No. IKD/8/2006 and delivered a Judgement 2009 and made a declaration that the Orelade and Ladera family of Gberigbe Orelade are in the exclusion of other families, the Chieftaincy family entitled to produce the Baale of Gberigbe Orelade in Ikorodu Local Government area of Lagos State.

“it is hereby declared that the first to the tenth Defendants are not members of Orelade and Ladera Chieftaincy family of Gberigbe Orelade in the Ikorodu Local Government”

“It is hereby declared that none of the first to the tenth Defendants is entitled to be nominated and/or installed as the Baale of Gberigbe Orelade”

“An order of perpetual injunction is hereby made restraining the first to the tenth and the fourteenth Defendants from intermeddling in the selection and installation of Baale of Gberigbe Orelade”.

“The counterclaim of the Defendants is dismissed in its entirety and the Claimants are entitled to the cost of this action assessed at N25,000.00 Court dated 22 of October, 2009 and delivered by Honourable Justice H.A.O. Abiru.

The Baale elect however, wants government and the Police authority to call the land grabbers to order for peace to reign in the community.

One of the claimants to Royal family of Gberigbe Orelade Community in Ikorodu area of Lagos State Alhaji Moshood Andu Oshikoya, Secretary of the Royal family has alleged that its member were shot at by a suspected leader of the cultist headed by one Olamilekan Abudu (a.k.a Koboko) and the land grabber during a recent visit to the Community by the Baale elect was attacked.

It said the family and a team of Police investigating team from Abuja were blocked from gaining access to the Community.

The family secretary claimed that all cultists driven out from other communities in Lagos State are now being abhorred by Koboko in Gberigbe Orelade Community.

A police source claimed that the said suspect, who was in the company of his gang opened fire as soon as he sighted the operatives, wounding several members of the family and damaging the Police vehicle.

“The family secretary, Alhaji Oshikoya explained that Police team was sent from Abuja in response to petitions we wrote to the Inspector General of Police Alkali Usman Baba in Abuja.

He said this was after armed cultist led by Koboko and the landgrabbers from a family at Gberigbe Orelade came to dislodge him and the entire family from the community.

The secretary alleged that the Kingpin of the cultist Olalekan Abudu (a.k.a Koboko) carried out this dastardly act, out of bitterness and deep frustration suffered from losing four court cases over the land and chieftaincy tussle in the community, both at the Magistrate and High Court levels including the outcomes of all Police mediation parleys held at different times in Lagos and Abuja.

Meanwhile two operatives of the Nigerian Army 174 Battalion, Ikorodu Lagos State going on their own were attacked by Koboko and his gangs which made the soldiers to reinforce and neutralize the gun wielding guys in the process.

As the Nigerian Army operatives approached the base of the cultist, they came under rapid fire from the group. In a bold and clinical response, the military officers fought back gallantly.

The force eventually neutralized the overall kingpin of the cultists popularly known as Koboko who was shot on the right thigh and escaped with bullet wound.

He was said to have been the brain behind all attacks in Ikorodu axis because he abhorred all cultist who have been sent out from other communities to Gberigbe Orelade community in Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

At the time of filing this report, three policemen and one army officer are receiving treatment  having sustained serious bullet injuries.

When contacted on phone, the Police Public Relations Officer CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi could not be reached on phone and refuse to reply a text message sent to him before filing this report.
